Introduction of a book written by a owner,Shinichi Nakazono. "Shiokaze Street "(A word document will be opend)
A comment by the lecturer of English at the University of Miyazaki i
I myself am an American currently teaching as a full-time Lecturer of English at the University of Miyazaki. Regarding Mr. Nakazono, my Japanese wife and I have been friends of his ever since we first started visiting his ryokan more than 10 years ago. However, until recently we were unaware of his literary talent,as seen in the moving and tragic story he wrote about his friend Mr. Locke.
As an American deeply interested in Japanese culture, I can honestly tell you that _Shiokaze Street_ will be of great interest to many people, whether Japanese or non-Japanese.
He weaves together his narrative while revealing much of the subtlety and beauty of traditional Japanese culture, literature and art. And he does this while also illuminating the local landscape, history, people, and important sites as found in the Kagoshima area. So, really, his story manages to show many things at one time, not least of which is Mr. Nakazono’s own deep talent of poetic reverie in the best spirit of Japanese literature.

Very fond memories of staying here, despite the fact that we were forced to stay 3 extra nights (screwing up our itinerary) due to a super typhoon!
Yes it does have a slightly weird 1970's youth hostel vibe and it's kind of patched up, but I got the overriding feeling that it's been honed over 40 years to be the perfect place to stay! :) Best internet connection of anywhere we stayed, better than Tokyo! Free wifi, a free PC in the communal area with tea and coffee and snacks. Mr Nakazono is a legend, he's so helpful and a great guy. He walked with us to a couple of local restaurants on 2 separate nights, and bought us a drink on our first night. When the local place with an English menu was closed, he walked us to a different place and TRANSLATED THE MENU FOR US. You wouldn't get this service at a 6 star hotel!
We loved Kagoshima, and hope to go back sometime in the future. If we do we will definitely stay here.
The ryokan is well located and the owner will pick you up and drop you at the ferry, which is great. When you arrive he will take the time to tell you where every thing s and where you can find different restaurants are. Our favourite quote was a dead pan description of theater front area " many restaurants, vey tasty". You had to be there.Highly recommended. Not new but comfortable.
I've actually been to Nakazono ryokan last year, and i found it quite ok. Not the best, but it was clean, room was quite large (for a single room in Japan anyway), it's in the center of Kagoshima (really close to the ferry for Sakurajima), and the owner was really nice and helpful provinding maps and advice on what to do/see.
I had been looking for a long time for other ryokans to book on the web beforehand (even in japanese) but wasn't able to find anything else than Nakazono... but i'd really go back without hesitation, it wasn't crowded at all (even for mid-august) and i've spend a good time there!
